Did you know that over the last 20 years that wild pigs have seriously been on the increase? Did you know that they are a threat to native wildlife and cause millions of dollars in damage each year to agriculture, forests, structures and even farming equipment each year?
It is true that wild pigs have been free ranging around in the Southeast of the US since Hernando Desoto brought them as food for the settlers back during the 16th century. But during the most recent 20 years, there has been quite an increase in the numbers of this nuisance animal.
A little history is that prior to the 1990s the feral pigs spread in natural ways which resulted in the organic type pattern of an animal in the wild on the increase. But what has caused an unnatural increase is the amount of hunting. One thing that makes their numbers so stubborn is that they can survive in almost any environment. Feral pigs are nocturnal and very elusive. They eat mostly plants as well as insects, worms, small mammals and eggs of young birds. Another thing that is a problem is that they have 3-8 piglets per litter, start having litters at 6 months old and live for 2-3 years.
