Dangers and Repercussions of DIY Wildlife Control Solutions

DIY Nightmares
A vent entry point that a client attempted to seal.

Unfortunately, after the momma raccoon left one day, this homeowner thought he would solve the issue of re-entry. What you are seeing here is a roof vent that the mama raccoon gained entry through originally. So, you may ask…. what’s the problem? Was there any harm done? Well, the little baby raccoons that were still inside the home think so! If you are a homeowner, please do not get involved or in the way of what a professional trapper is doing!

Man Gives Armadillo a Drink from a Water Bottle [News Blog]

March 12 (UPI) — A Brazilian man who came face-to-face a thirsty armadillo offered the animal some water from his bottle and the encounter was caught on camera.

The video, recorded Thursday in Dourados, Mato Grosso do Sul, shows the man pouring water out of a bottle as the armadillo thirstily laps it up.

The filmer said the man offered the armadillo some water because it appeared to be thirsty.

“I was expecting a friend to come work and when he arrived, he saw an armadillo and grabbed a bottle of water to give to the animal,” the filmer wrote.

Armadillos are considered living dinosaurs, that are left remaining from previous eras, and the only mammals on the earth that have their own built-in suit of armor.

Do Your Part To Keep Rats Away [News Blog]

What to do if neighbors aren’t doing their part

None of us want to have to deal with a rat problem in our community.  But, unfortunately, this can be a real a problem-  and there are a number of things that we can be doing to keep things under control. Karen Stiles of our call for action office joins us in the newsroom with more information.

Some of the neighborhood services departments in our area indicate that a major contributor to the rat problem comes from people not disposing of their trash properly.  But, another contributing factor comes from the waste that our dogs leave in our yards.

WORRIED ABOUT RATS? Call 1-866-263 WILD!

To keep these situations from getting out of control, use proper, tight-fitting dumpsters and trash receptacles.  Do not leave your garbage outside in plastic bags or containers that can be easily opened by vermin. If you do not have enough room in your dumpster or receptacles, contact your city or municipality to inquire about other options such as getting a second dumpster or taking excess garbage to the dump.  Also, clean up after your pets on a regular basis. And, if you have feeders outside for birds, make sure that these feeders are up high enough from the ground and cannot be easily accessed by rodents.

If you notice your neighbors aren’t doing their part, contact your city or municipalities’ neighborhood services department to report a problem.  They can assist with checking things out, taking action, and providing further education on how to keep a rat problem under control or from happening in the first place.  in the next few weeks, the city of Milwaukee will be working on an extra effort related to this problem. But, in the meantime, they have a great brochure on their website that addresses how to avoid and resolve problems with rats.

Due to what the animals leave behind, such a urine, feces, ticks, fleas and parasites which wildlife leave on the premises that they inhabit (whether it is attic, garage, roof, walls etc.) The below info is to educate you about the possible health risks that can happen if you, your family or your pets are exposed to any of this infected matter.

Rats host numerous parasite species and can possibly transmit fatal diseases to humans.  A Johns Hopkins University research team found rodent allergen in 95 percent of the Baltimore homes they tested. Allowing rats to contaminate attic insulation and other building materials with waste products can lead to serious health conditions.

• Hantavirus

A potentially fatal pulmonary virus found in fecal matter that spreads after becoming airborn. It can also be contracted through contact with rodent urine, droppings and saliva. Common symptoms include fever, fatigue, chills, muscle aches, headaches, dizziness, and abdominal ailments.

• Rat Bite Fever

Caused by a rat bite. Common symptoms include swelling, fever, nausea, chills, sore throat, headaches, muscle aches, abdominal pain and vomiting.

• Food Poisoning

Frequently results in salmonella after food or water has been contaminated by rodent feces or urine.

Do I Have Bats? [Lakewood Ranch, FL]

Oftentimes people get unnerved by a bat that they find stranded in their home.  You see, bats follow the flow of air currents. However, no matter where you find a bat in your home, it is never fun. You should know, that to find a bat in your home is fairly common. It is interesting to note that a colony of bats can get substantial in size, but even so, they sleep all day long. As a result they can stay well hidden from you and well under your radar.  But the mystery doesn’t have to end there.

So, to answer your question, “Do I Have Bats?”

Brown Bat showing teeth.

#1 HELP! I found a bat inside my home!

It is true that bats mostly prefer to have roosting places up high like in an attic. However, on occasion a bat will follow an air current into a vent or wall cavity looking for a place to sleep or an alternate way to escape. Bats can be found in attics, bedrooms, offices or anywhere there is a ventilation duct to use as a through way.

WORRIED ABOUT BATS?

Feel free to call us with any questions

#2 You have heard fluttering sounds coming from the walls.

Although bats do not make a lot of sound during the day, they will leave their roosting place in the evening to feed. Typically you would hear sounds of fluttering, scratching or small squeeking noises like this at dusk or at dawn. This occurs when they are exiting or returning to roost. One other time is if there is a loud sound in the home, like a door slamming,  as this might disturb them while they are sleeping. Otherwise- you might not even know they are there and a whole colony could be living inside of walls in the home.

#3 You have seen bat droppings, poop, or guana on walls or windowsills.

Bats keep the same routines. They will roost in the same locale year after year. As they enter and exit a building, bats will leave guana droppings on the entrance to their roosting place each night. Over time these will accumulate and typically could be seen for example,  on a porch area, wall, windowsill or open vented area. Whatever place that the bats are entering your home.

Guano is similar to mouse feces only larger. It is suggested that you inspect your attic windows for droppings that are evident. As well as being on the look out for any possible entry points ie openings where the creatures could be getting in and out. More than likely it will be up high, but if you have a good number of bats the guano will be fairly obvious.

Meet ‘Chirocopter’ a drone that flies within swarms of bats [News Blog]

By Katie Langin

Wildlife biologists have put drones to work counting whales, checking bird nests, and nabbing poachers. Now, they’ve designed a drone that can hover within fast-flowing swarms of bats as they zip across a darkened nighttime sky.

The drone—or “Chirocopter” (named after Chiroptera, the scientific name for bats)—is equipped with a microphone to record echolocation chirps (sounds that bats use to navigate) and a thermal camera that can “see” bats by detecting their body heat. Similar technology has been used to record bats from the ground and from towers, but the Chirocopter has an advantage because it can be placed anywhere in 3D space, the team reports this month in Methods in Ecology and Evolution.

WORRIED ABOUT BATS?

Feel free to call us with any questions

1-866-263-WILD!

Case in point: The team deployed a Chirocopter outside a cave in New Mexico that is home to about 800,000 Brazilian free-tailed bats. Just before dawn, the bats form dense aggregations and return to the cave along a chaotic aerial “freeway” at speeds exceeding 100 kilometers an hour. The team maneuvered the Chirocopter to hover in the middle of the fast-flowing swarm for 84 minutes at heights ranging from 5 meters to 50 meters—and there were so many bats that the scientists recorded 46 echolocation chirps per minute.

The researchers hope that after returning to the cave to get more footage and recordings, they’ll be able to figure out how the fast-flying mammals avoid colliding with one another. Chirocopters could also be put to work in other places to study how bats move around wind turbines and other human-made structures. (No bats were harmed in the testing of this technology—they all swerved to avoid collision with the Chirocopter.)

A Field Guide for Living with Wildlife this Spring!

How to Watch out for Animal Safety

These tips will help you live in harmony with nature and prevent injuring a baby animal or causing it to be orphaned.

With regards to chimneys and vents:

Truth be told, an open chimney or dryer/stove vent is considered an “open house” invitation from a wild animal’s viewpoint. Why? Because they make appealing places to have young and are generally cozy environments. Don’t be shocked or too surprised if you should happen to find some guests in your chimney this spring… If you can possibly let them be- just temporarily- that would be one option. However, once the babies have left, then you should have the area decontaminated and the chimney should be closed off or capped.

A word of caution: NEVER attempt to evacuate the chimney by smoking out the animals… it can have deadly consequences. Baby animals may not be able to get out on their own.

Most birds are protected by the Migratory Bird Act and cannot be killed or moved. Unless you are able to exclude birds out early, prior to them laying eggs, you must leave them alone for a few weeks until the young are able to fly on their own.

There is a way to humanely attempt to provoke the animals to leave and they are as follows:

  1. Place a radio in the fireplace and turn up the volume.
  2. Turn on lights.
  3. Carefully place rags soaked in cider vinegar (but not ammonia) in the fireplace.
Wildlife Removal Lakewood Ranch
Chimneys are an easy access point for many animals.

Animals in the Attic:

Before commencing to spring clean out your attic, check around for any animals that might have taken up residence there.

Don’t even try to evict any animals– there could be babies and you never want to separate mama from a baby wild animal. Since wild animals can cause a lot of damage not to mention some serious health risks, you may need professional help to determine the species of the animal and legally trap and relocate the family of guests. This is the safest, best and most humane way of solving this problem of animals in homes.

Before you Clean out your Attic- check for uninvited guests!

Outdoors:

Windows and Sliding Doors

Sometimes birds can fly right into glass pane windows or sliding glass doors. To avoid this you can place a visual deterrant or obstruction of Mylar tape from the top of the glass outside in front of the window.

Siding

There are special places that animals like to come in to your home from. Check behind appliances, anywhere that pipes enter into the building. Some animals can get in to even a 1/2″ to a 1/4″ hole or crack for example snakes or mice. Cover up those holes with insualtion, paper, cloth– then give it a few days and see if those materials have been pushed out. Afterwards seal up those gaps.

Lawns

In order to protect baby wildlife you should walk around the yard before mowing to take a look. You are looking for things like turtles, and nests of baby rabbits. Turtles are fine to gently relocate. However rabbit nests should be left alone, so that the mom rabbit can be sure to return to the same place when she returns to feed them. They’ll be grown up and ready to live on their own in just 3 weeks. A great tip is to leave a safety zone of grass around the nest until they are gone.

Trees

Keep branches around your house trimmed in order to dissuade wild critters from climbing. Be sure to look carefully at the limbs for birds and squirrels prior to trimming. Make sure that there are no nests there. If by chance a nest is accidentally knocked out here are some guidelines for preserving the animals..

Retrieve the babies and the nest and move them to a secure nearby area.

If the nest is damaged, do your best to mend it or replace it with something of similar size.

It is ok to use a household container as long as it hasn’t been used previously for cleaners.

You could punch holes in the bottom of plastic containers to help for drainage.

Be on the lookout for the mother to come back. Do not worry that if a human scent gets on the babym it will cause the mother to reject it. That is a myth.

Keeping One Step Ahead of Local Bandits [News Blog]

Cori Brown – Contact Reporter

The Backyard Naturalist

Raccoon

A raccoon on the prowl for his next meal. (Cori Brown photo)

It’s 13 and counting. That’s the number of cute and furry black masked burglars raiding bird feeders (and anything else they can get) over the last six months in our neighborhood. Yes, the annual raccoon invasion is in full swing, as in bird feeders swinging right off of our trees and decks.

How do I know we’ve had 13 visitors? Our neighbor already caught 12 of them with wonderfully smelly cat food and a humane trap.

No. 13, however, is giving him a run for his money.

He’s eluded him for several weeks now and managed to snatch the cat food out of the trap multiple times to boot! Even worse, he’s learned to escape the trap by rolling it over to open the door. What a clever little devil he is!

As a result, those of us subjected to these nightly escapades must now remove our feeders and bring them inside. When you have a lot of feeders like I do, this can be quite a nuisance.

Unfortunately, if I don’t do it, there are consequences to be had. One too many times I’ve found feeders on the ground, some broken beyond repair and others completely gone, as in dragged away to who knows where. Maybe the raccoons have a secret cache of bird feeder parts that they’re selling on the black market.

What I do know is that their raids are costing me money and time. Good squirrel proof feeders can be expensive. So far, they’ve broken three of them but I refuse to get new ones.

Though none of the three now function as designed (the weight mechanisms that keep bigger birds and squirrels out no longer work) they still work well enough to keep the nemesis squirrels away. I plan to keep them as long as I can.

Most of the feeders are in the side yard where I can see them best. This is also where Navi, ever a dog on patrol, dreams of catching up with them and chasing them off. I naively thought that just her presence would scare them away but this obviously hasn’t happened. These guys are fearless!

What is it about raccoons that makes them so clever? The first thing I think of is their paws. They may not have thumbs, but highly sensitive touch receptors on their dexterous fingers are right up there with our own hands.

Partner these sensitive paws with a quick-thinking brain and you have master manipulators at opening cans and doors, emptying containers and climbing up and down and all around to get whatever they want.

This brings me to another envious trait they have: adaptability. Life in the city is great, but suburban yards and country meadows will do just fine, too. From the poshest addresses to back street alleys to campgrounds, they roam with impunity and swagger.

Add to this their varied diet as omnivores and you have a one-two slam dunk. Being omnivores means they eat their veggies as well as meat (they are great role models for fussy eating kids). This is why they probably think they’ve died and gone to heaven when your garbage becomes their dining room table. Throw in the half eaten Tasty cake, leftover chips, hot dogs and French fries and you have the all-American junk food diet!

Now this makes me wonder, do they have a weight problem when these dream foods are so frequently at their disposal? I couldn’t find much information on this other than a story of sixteen fat and happy raccoons in Louisiana that were trapped and relocated away from people who were feeding them all kinds of sugary food. Some weighed between 30-40 pounds when a normal weight in the wild is 10-30 pounds.

In this way they are a lot like humans — too much of a good thing can be bad for you. Hopefully they returned to their normal diet of creatures like frogs, fish, birds, bird eggs and a variety of fruits, nuts and seeds.

Not realizing that aquatic animals make up such a large part of their diet, I can see another challenge in the offing. My new pond came through the winter quite well. I diligently kept the water flowing for the frogs, fish and snails that now inhabit it. All have grown and thrived in their new home.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the raccoons will avail themselves of the creek across the road rather than my pond for their freshwater cravings. I think I will put up a sign that says, “This way to the creek” to help them along.

In the meantime, I need to build a secure bird feeder storage box outside to stash away my feeders at night. My plan is to build a sturdy plywood box with a lock on it. Painting a nice family portrait of some raccoons on it would add ambiance, not to mention something for the real raccoons to talk about!

There are health risks that you should be aware of

after any wild animal has been taken from your home.

What Are the Health Risks of Raccoons in Lakewood Ranch FL?

The health risks of raccoons should never be underestimated. Raccoons create enormous damage and transmit infectious diseases to Parrish adults, children and pets. Contact a licensed and insured nuisance wildlife management company for expert raccoon removal, raccoon trapping and raccoon exclusion services.

The Health Risks of Raccoons

It’s important that you have that Parrish raccoon removed from your attic, crawl space, basement or other building location before things get out of hand. Raccoons contaminate building surfaces with urine and feces and chew up everything from electrical wires to support beams. If you hear noises in your attic, call a wildlife removal professional before a raccoon or some other wild animal causes significant damage or even a catastrophic fire.Wild animal droppings harbor dangerous parasites and foster the growth of mold and microbes. Raccoons are known carriers of infectious diseases that can be contracted by humans and pets.

• Raccoon Roundworm, or Baylisascaris, is a dangerous species of roundworm carried by raccoons. Millions of roundworm eggs are deposited into the environment through raccoon feces. Children and pets can easily ingest fertile eggs by coming into contact with infected soil, tree stumps and other seemingly safe locations. Once inside the body of an animal or human, the larvae migrate throughout the body and infect the brain, eyes, spinal cord and other organs.

• Rabies is a health risk commonly associated with wild animals. Rabies, which attacks the central nervous system, can be fatal if left untreated.

• Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection spread to humans through raccoon feces and urine. Common symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, severe headaches, high fever, anemia, meningitis and organ failure.

• Salmonella is also spread through raccoon feces. Humans and pets can ingest the bacteria through incidental contact with infected areas. The symptoms of Salmonella poisoning include high fever, severe diarrhea and abdominal pain.

Raccoon Trapping and Exclusion

A wildlife management expert can humanely remove and relocate raccoons and other nuisance wild animals. Professionally trained wildlife removal specialists can also decontaminate building materials, repair all damage and permanently seal your home or business to ensure that the problem doesn’t reoccur. Local wildlife management companies provide expert raccoon trapping, raccoon removal and raccoon exclusion services in the greater Parrish area.

Rodent Removal, Lakewood Ranch FL [News Blog]

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT)

By A.J. Nwoko

A Richmond mother calls 12 On Your Side, saying her house is being taken over by rats and it’s putting her six children’s health at risk.

Zakiyyah Dixon says her landlord isn’t doing enough.

“I don’t even feel like I’m at home…I feel like I’m living with somebody else, and they’re not even people,” said Dixon.

Dixon says she’s rented the home since 2017, but now:

“I just don’t even want to be here, because they’re running me out,” said Dixon.

All because of rats. Dixon says the problem is so bad, she’s seeing them in broad daylight.

“Oh yeah…It’s a family. It’s a family. I don’t know exactly how many, but it’s more than two… maybe three or four,” said Dixon.

She says she’s spent hundreds of dollars trying to solve the issue herself.

“I bought the stickies, and then I bought the little wooden ones that break their necks – those wasn’t working,” said Dixon.

Eventually, she reached out to her landlord. Dixon showed NBC12 the work he did, everything from boarding up and sealing holes in the wall and even supplying her with two special rat traps, but she says her rodent problems haven’t changed.

Her landlord did not want to be named on camera. He provided NBC12 with a receipt of services from the RRHA inspection and said in a statement that an exterminator has been to the property routinely to eliminate the issue. He also instructed her to keep a cleaner kitchen – something Dixon says she’s been doing.

WORRIED ABOUT RATS? Call 1-866-263 WILD!

“Besides trying to keep the house as clean as possible, I take the garbage out every night. There should be no garbage left in the house at night,” said Dixon. “I am like to the point where I don’t even want to sleep here, because at night – not even to mention the fact that during the day it’s out of control – but at night, you hear them, you hear them…it’s like a constant [scurrying sound].”

As Dixon works to take back her home, she fears for her children’s safety.

“I just want out of this situation, and if I can’t get out of this situation, [the landlord] needs to fix what’s going on here so that it can be safe for me and my kids, because that’s my main concern.”

Dixon says the issue has gotten so bad, the rodents even chewed through her two-year-old’s blankets.

Her landlord says he’ll continue working with her to eliminate any future issues.

Abandoned Townhome Becomes Nightmare [News Blog]

Written by Jalyn Souchek, Reporter

CORALVILLE (KWWL) –

Raccoons falling from their roof is how one homeowner described the nightmare of living next door to an abandoned property.

Phil Ganoe and his wife had just had their first child when they bought their first home over 15 years ago. The next year, their neighbor up and left the connecting townhome, leaving it abandoned.

“It was our first home and we were excited and things started out real well. We didn’t ever think we would end up where we are now,” Ganoe said.

The situation turned into a nightmare when a few years later a storm severely damaged the roof on the abandoned side, leaving a large hole in the ceiling.

It only got worse.

Raccoon Removal River Wilderness Parrish FL

“Every time it rained or snowed, God, we worried,” Ganoe said.

The open hole meant the home was filling up with mold. He worried about the health effects it could be having for his family but, again, it only got worse.

“Then the raccoons came. So, the raccoons got in through the hole in the ceiling and then, before you know, we have raccoons in our ceiling,” he said. “There were dead baby raccoons on our first steps. They had nested in the roof and the weight of them had busted through and fallen out onto our front steps.”

Over the years, Ganoe had tried to get in contact with the old neighbor, but without much luck.

He said they tried to sell their home, but the eyesore that was next door didn’t bring in a single interested buyer. It took several calls to the city.  Eventually, the city of Coralville took possession of the property, he said.

That’s when Habitat for Humanity was able to step in and help.

After 15 years, Ganoe said he was in disbelief something was going to be done. He also feared the damage would be so bad that their home wouldn’t be able to be saved, but that wasn’t the case. The first order of business was to replace the entire roof.

“After hearing Phil’s story and his families’ issues that they had due to this property, we kind of thought it made sense to help out as much as we could,” Heath Brewer, Habitat Executive Director, said. He said, when Habitat took on the property, they had no idea how much the neighbors had been impacted by it.

With a new roof over their head and a raccoon-free home, Ganoe spends extra time helping Habitat with the renovation of the home. After 15 years, he will soon have neighbors again.

“They were nice enough to put a roof on our house. They didn’t have to do that and we’re very grateful for that and, being a neighbor, I kind of feel like that’s the neighborly thing to do,” he said.

To show his gratitude, Ganoe is raising money for Habitat to cover the costs of repairing his side of the home. More about that fundraiser can be found here.

Brewer said the renovations should be completed in April and it will be available for affordable housing. He said the renovations not only help the Ganoe family with their headaches, but it will add value to the neighborhood.

Some Armadillo Facts

1 In the state of Texas the Nine Banded armadillo was nicknamed the ‘hillbilly speed bump’ or the ‘Texas speed bump.’

2. In the 1920s during the great depression armadillos were also eaten and known as the “Hoover hog” due to President Hoover’s failure to keep meat on the table.

3. Armadillos prefer soil that is soft and that they can dig into easily. They will do so for food purposes, as well as for safety ones. They create “bolt” holes to have an ability to escape threats.

4. The smallest armadillo is about 5″ and the largest one is up to 5′ and 132 lbs.

5. They can hold their breath for as long as 6 minutes. Additionally, because the armor they wear weighs so much, they can actually walk along the bottom of any body of water. If they wanted to swim they could do that too– and can swallow air to inflate their stomachs, giving them the ability to float- if only temporary.

6. They can run pretty fast in short bursts… and that is their main source of defense. The main cause of their road deaths however, is probably not because they were hit by the wheels of a car…. Its because they tend to jump vertically into the air when spooked, as high as 3-4 feet and so they crash into fenders or underneath of cars passing by.

7. They can possibly carry leprosy due to their low body temperature. It is most likely that humans gave the disease to them and not the other way around.
