Man Gives Armadillo a Drink from a Water Bottle [News Blog]

March 12 (UPI) — A Brazilian man who came face-to-face a thirsty armadillo offered the animal some water from his bottle and the encounter was caught on camera.

The video, recorded Thursday in Dourados, Mato Grosso do Sul, shows the man pouring water out of a bottle as the armadillo thirstily laps it up.

The filmer said the man offered the armadillo some water because it appeared to be thirsty.

“I was expecting a friend to come work and when he arrived, he saw an armadillo and grabbed a bottle of water to give to the animal,” the filmer wrote.

Armadillos are considered living dinosaurs, that are left remaining from previous eras, and the only mammals on the earth that have their own built-in suit of armor.

Some Armadillo Facts

1 In the state of Texas the Nine Banded armadillo was nicknamed the ‘hillbilly speed bump’ or the ‘Texas speed bump.’

2. In the 1920s during the great depression armadillos were also eaten and known as the “Hoover hog” due to President Hoover’s failure to keep meat on the table.

3. Armadillos prefer soil that is soft and that they can dig into easily. They will do so for food purposes, as well as for safety ones. They create “bolt” holes to have an ability to escape threats.

4. The smallest armadillo is about 5″ and the largest one is up to 5′ and 132 lbs.

5. They can hold their breath for as long as 6 minutes. Additionally, because the armor they wear weighs so much, they can actually walk along the bottom of any body of water. If they wanted to swim they could do that too– and can swallow air to inflate their stomachs, giving them the ability to float- if only temporary.

6. They can run pretty fast in short bursts… and that is their main source of defense. The main cause of their road deaths however, is probably not because they were hit by the wheels of a car…. Its because they tend to jump vertically into the air when spooked, as high as 3-4 feet and so they crash into fenders or underneath of cars passing by.

7. They can possibly carry leprosy due to their low body temperature. It is most likely that humans gave the disease to them and not the other way around.

Health Risks Armadillos

Leprosy, or Hansen’s Disease, is rarely diagnosed in the United States. Nevertheless, most leprosy cases result from hunting, skinning or consuming armadillos. Approximately 200 people are diagnosed with leprosy in the United States each year. Scientists now recommend that contact with armadillos be avoided altogether. Fortunately, leprosy can be treated with antibiotics and various drugs during the early stages of the infection.

Many people make the mistake of ignoring the skin lesions associated with a leprosy infection. They wrongly assume that the ancient disease of leprosy was eradicated long ago. Even trained physicians fail to consider the possibility of a leprosy infection. Skin lesions should be diagnosed and treated as soon as possible. Failure to do so could result in lifelong nerve damage.

There are two common forms of leprosy, tuberculoid and lepromatous. Both versions of leprosy produce skin lesions and sores. The lepromatous form is more serious, causing the formation of prominent lumps and bumps. Common symptoms include muscle weakness and lack of feeling and numbness on arms, legs and feet. Researchers have determined that about 20 percent of all armadillos are infected with leprosy.

Armadillo Control and Removal in Sarasota

Why do I have Armadillos in my yard?

In this post, we will talk about the question “Why do I have Armadillos in my yard?” This will address Armadillo control and removal in Sarasota and surrounding areas.

An armadillo on his hind legs in a cage.

The most common question I am asked when on an Armadillo job is, “Why my yard and not the neighbors?” Well that’s an easy question to answer, YOU have a food source and your neighbors don’t. Actually, you have a primary issue of “grubs” in your yard- and the Armadillo is a secondary issue. When I give this answer many people respond with: “But I have a company that sprays my lawn!” Well I hate to tell you this, either they are not spraying for grubs or they just may  not be a good reputable company.

“Well, we use the same company as our neighbors, yet they  don’t have this problem.” Ok this is where it gets tricky… you might water more or possibly your lawn is lower than the neighbors making it hold more moisture. Or you have brought plants or mulch in that were already infected with grubs and they have now infested your yard. Bottom line  is  you have to get control of grubs in your yard!

Controlling grubs.

The best way we have found to control grubs is using a chemical called Triclorfon or DYLOX is another name for this granular product.

It is available at Home Depot or Lowes. Use per directions… water in with 1/2 inch of water immediately as it is UV sensitive. I suggest doing it on an evening as it has more time to soak in and not evaporate. Treat all areas including flower beds but keep away from hibiscus. Remember to keep a little extra to treat plants or mulch you might bring in later. Even if  your plants are in a pot treat them because  you want to make your yard a sterile environment, for a lack of better words,  so any soil, plants, mulch that you bring into your yard gets treated… This should be done  once a year,  and this will resolve your grub problem.

Now you still have to trap and remove the armadillos (They won’t just go away) but long term you should not have any problems!
