It was apparent that the mother had torn through a plastic cover on the car’s window, the article continued. Initially, they only found one baby in the car. However, since it is known that they usually give birth in multiple numbers they kept looking and looking for other babies. When they opened up the trunk, they did discover a second baby raccoon that was covered in water. The wildlife control organization stated that “I felt pretty bad for the owner of the car. They tore up the sun shades, chewed some shows and used the bathroom all over the place” After putting the raccoons in a kennel, he took them to the woods and released them.

Raccoons are usually not intimidated by people and they are also good at swimming. Combine those two traits together and you are at risk of losing your munchies. That is what this paddle boarder found out near the shore line of a North American river.  This paddlers amazement turned into fear when she observed the raccoon swimming out toward her kayak. All of a sudden, he grabbed her knapsack full of treats and she had to engage in a tug of war to get them back! After a real minor altercation and a gentle bonk on the head, the raccoon stepped away in defeat. Not to worry fella, there are always plenty of garbage cans out there that won’t fight with you! Check out our post on how to keep raccoons out of trash cans here!

Reproduction

Opossums can have up to 8 babies in a litter!

Did you know that an opossom is the only marsupial (pouched mammal) that is found in the United States and Canada? When the babies are born they are helpless and tiny as honey bees. They immediately crawl into the mother’s pouch where they continue to develop.

Defense

When threatened, an opossum typically hisses and shows its teeth to look scary to a predator. If that doesn’t work, then it will pretend to be dead and fall over on its side– this will often result in a predator walking away.

Skills

They are excellent at climbing, because they have opposable rear thumbs and long tails that can wrap around tree limbs. Surprisingly, they are also great swimmers, but do not like the water and prefer to be on land.

Benefits of Opossums

While many wild creatures harbor ticks and spread Lyme disease, opossums kill 96.5% of ticks that land on them. A single opossum may be hoovering up and killing 4,000 ticks every week and thereby protecting us from Lyme disease.

The Most Beautiful Birds of Florida Pt I [Bird Deterrent Sarasota]

The Most Beautiful Birds of Florida Pt I [Bird Deterrent Sarasota]

Rufescens Egrett Fort DesotoPark

You might be surprised to know that this bird, in the past was a victim of the plume trade. This gorgeous Reddish Egrett was photographed at Fort Desoto Park in St. Petersburg, FL. Its amazing colors here start with a bright pink bill that has a black tip. This bird is larger than many similar herons, you may be familiar with, however it is smaller than the great blue heron and great egret. There are two different color morphs– you may see an adult with a slate blue body and reddish head, or an adult white all over morph. If you ever notice the plumage standing out in full ruff– on the head and neck, then you will know that it is mating season. Ref: wikipedia.org/wiki/Reddish_egret

Did you know that White Pelicans are significantly larger than Brown Pelicans? They are some of the heaviest flying birds in the world. They do not plunge-style-dive as the Browns do. They happen to be superb soarers and can do so for long distances. [See video below]

Scarlett Ibis – Found in Trinidad and Tobego among other locals

Here we have the Scarlett Ibis– It is technically not a FL bird, however, the white morph Ibis CAN be found in Florida– and some scientists are calling for that bird to be considered the same species as the Scarlet Ibis. The Scarlet is the national bird of the islands of Trinidad and Tobago. The juvenile bird [below] ranges from grays to blacks, and it takes two feather moltings for the amazing scarlett color to appear. Only the tips of the wings remain black.

Rabies Problems and Rabid Raccoons [Sarasota]

RRDepartment of Health Rabies Alert

Rabies Problems and Rabid Raccoons [Sarasota]

Rabies is still a real threat to the health and welfare of people as well as animals. This includes places here locally such as Sarasota, Lakewood Ranch and Bradenton. According to the CDC, every year, about 40,000 people receive a rabies prevention treatment called post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) because they had contact with a potentially rabid animal.

More than 90% of all rabid animals reported to CDC each year occur in wildlife. The animals that get rabies the most are raccoons, skunks, foxes, and bats. The facts are however, that most people in the U.S. get PEP treatment due to close contact with domestic animals such as cats or dogs.

What is the average cost for humans to be treated for rabies?

Average cost of rabies treatment exceeds $3,000.

What are the Diseases that Raccoons can Spread to Humans?

Rabies

Raccoons can be rather aggressive animals that can give diseases to people through bites, scratches and even indirect contact. Due to the fact that it is possible to come in contact with these wooly creatures around our homes, especially at night, it is vital to be careful when you are around them. Please use precautions when handling materials they’ve been in contact with or left behind, such as their waste material.

The most common disease people acquire from raccoons is rabies. If you are infected with it, the virus affects the central nervous system, and it can cause fevers, hallucinations and seizures. If a raccoon carries rabies, the virus is present in its saliva, so infected raccoons can transmit the disease through bites or scratches, as their claws are likely to have come in contact with their mouths. Staying away from raccoons in the wild is always a good idea, this includes if you see a raccoon in your back yard or out and about in a park. Even more, this is especially true if their behavior appears aggressive or erratic. Rabies can be deadly, but there are very few confirmed cases of raccoon-acquired rabies that have resulted in human death.

Salmonella

Salmonella bacteria are found in raccoon poop, and people can catch Salmonella infections when they come in cotanct with the droppings and then inadvertently transferring it from the hands to the mouth. These bacteria can be dormant in a dry environment, and then re-activate under favorable conditions. Salmonella poisoning can lead to fever, abdominal pain and severe diarrhea. It can be particularly dangerous to children, the elderly and people who have weaker immune systems.

Roundworm

Raccoons can excrete high numbers of roundworm eggs through their feces. The eggs are light and can become airborne, potentially leading to infections resulting just from breathing the air. Incidental ingestion can also infect a host. Roundworm parasites can lead to serious health issues in humans as they affect the central nervous system, and can impair the body’s organs, including the brain. The most severe roundworm-related infections can result in vision loss or even a coma.

Leptospirosis

The bacterium Leptospira causes the disease Leptospirosis, which infects humans and a host of other animals, including raccoons. They excrete this particular microorganism through their urine; as such, people can become infected by drinking water that has been contaminated with these bacteria. Mild cases of Leptospirosis can result in high fevers, body pain and both vomiting and diarrhea. More serious cases may lead to anemia, meningitis and liver failure.

There are other diseases including bacterial ones such as E.Coli, fungus and rare parasites. If you handle, feed or clean up waste be aware of the hazards to your health and be sure to use the utmost of hygiene and be very aggressive about it.

Thank you for taking the time to read this post.

4 Stinging, Venomous or Biting Insects You Might be Surprised Live in Florida

4 Stinging, Venomous or Biting Insects You Might be Surprised Live in Florida

Scorpion

Scorpions vary in size from 1-4 inches long. They normally live outdoors, although they will invade homes and buildings. Scorpions will sting, but usually only when provoked or disturbed. Scorpion venom is a neurotoxin, but the dose injected usually is insufficient to prove fatal to an adult human. None of the several species of scorpions that occur in Florida is capable of inflicting a lethal sting. However, the site of the sting may be sore and swollen for some time.

Blister Beetle

Blister beetles are narrow beetles with a neck that is more slender than the head and wings. Adult beetles can release a fluid that causes blisters on human skin. The adult beetles feed on foliage, and people often come into contact with them, when moving through infested vegetation. The only suitable control of blister beetles is avoidance of individual beetles or chemical application to plants. It is necessary to check recommendations for the crop to determine the chemical to be used.

The Wheel Bug aka Assasin Bug

The wheel bug  is a bug with a coglike crest on its thorax. They feed on insects; however, humans can get bitten by accidental contact. The bug penetrates the skin with its beak and injects a salivary fluid used to kill its prey. Mostly caterpillars and other soft tissue insects. The fluid causes an immediate intense pain that lasts three to six hours. The best way to prevent wheel bug bites is to avoid the insect. Because most of their prey are pests, wheel bugs are considered as beneficial to the garden as ladybugs.

The Velvet Ant

Velvet ants are wingless antlike wasps. The females are solitary with an efficient, large stinger. Most species live on solitary bees and wasps. Humans are usually stung by velvet ants when the female is accidentally stepped on with bare feet or trapped against the body in clothes or bedding. Since the velvet ant is solitary and roaming, it is difficult to control. Their name velvet ant refers to their rather large amount of hair, which most often is bright scarlet or orange, but may also be black, white, silver, or gold. Black and white specimens are sometimes known as panda ants.  Their bright colors serve as aposematic signals. They are known for their extremely painful stings, hence the common name cow killer or cow ant. Any wasp like ant creature with hair is suspect of being this type as their colors range even into many variations and patterns of the below colors and more.

Snake Myths that You may already Believe [Lakewood Ranch]

Snake Myths [Lakewood Ranch]

Would you pass a true or false quiz on snake myths?

The red beaked snake looks directly ahead. It is a venomous rear fanged snake.

True or False.  Snakes have slimy skin.

False. It is a myth. Reptiles such as snakes, are covered with scales that are dry, and they do not secrete mucous. However frogs, toads and some other amphibians do and that is why those animals are slimy, but snakes are not.

True or False. You can tell how old a rattlesnake is, by counting the number of segments in his rattle.

False. It is a myth. The reason being is that a rattlesnake gains one rattle each time it sheds its skin. Young rattlers can shed as often as every few weeks. Older ones only shed twice a year. So to assume that a rattlesnake gains one rattle each year and then never loses a rattle bump is not correct. Last, a snake does not keep hold on to all its segments their entire life. As it happens naturally, during the course of a snake’s life and travels, some of them break off, are damaged and lost.

Having snake troubles? For more information and a FREE INSPECTION/ESTIMATE Call 1-866-263-WILD or (941)729-2103.

True or False. Every snake has fangs.

False. It is a myth. Every snake has teeth however only venomous snakes have fangs.

True or False. If a snake’s head is cut from it’s body it can still bite.

TRUE. Did you know that more than half of rattlesnake bites happen after the head has been cut off? Yes it can even still inject venom! Herpetologists suggest that it takes between 24-36 hours before the head can no longer bite.

So how did you do? Pass or fail? If you took the time to read and learn, you win!

Thank you for taking the time to read this post.

We are your experts for humane snake exclusion, trapping and removal in Lakewood Ranch and surrounding areas. For more information and a FREE INSPECTION/ESTIMATE Call 1-866-263-WILD or (941)729-2103.

Fun Facts About Moles

Fun Facts About Moles

  1. Moles have voracious appetites. –Did you know that if a mole is deprived of food, it may die of starvation in just a few hours?
  2. Moles are not entirely solitary creatures. –Did you know that Moles will fight to the death to defend their territory? But, many times, they do not live by themselves.
  3. Moles do not always make molehills. –If you see a mound of dirt near the opening of a mole burrow, all that is telling you is that the soil is soft and easy to dig up. If the soil is more firm, the Mole will make smaller piles more frequently around the “doors” to their home.
  4. Moles like it quiet. –They build their highways where food is present and noise is not. Since the Mole is dependent upon its ability to hear an earthworm moving upward from below the tunnel, or downward from above the tunnel, it really requires a rather quiet locale. If there is heavy equipment around that is likely to make them move to another place.
  5. Lawns that have Bermuda grass have stronger resistance to moles. The reason being is that Bermuda puts out longer shooter strands, up to two meters (6 feet) away from the individual blades of grass across the top of the ground. This causes much more tension and the moles can not get around very easily.

BONUS

Everything about moles is not that bad.

If they are present in conservative numbers, moles can be desirable for killing grubs in the lawn. Grubs kill grass and young shrubs. A white grub is usually just an appetizer to the main attraction for the mole which is the earthworm.

Also soil gets moved around quite a bit with mole activity. Their tunneling causes the soil to be moved and aerated, and carries nutrients deeper into the earth. They carry mineral-rich material up to the surface and that makes more nutrients available to plants. So that is, in fact, a very good thing. If you have just a few moles that aren’t killing plants or causing eyesores you may decide to just live and let them live.

However if you have concern of a more serious matter, call Nuisance Wildlife Removal, Inc. today, to humanely solve your wildlife problems, and wildlife proof your property. 1-866-263-WILD or 941-729-2103.
