Part I

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

There are several risks associated with raccoons. The following discusses the threat of disease that is present. However the other dangers are property damage, and attacks on your pets.

So, what are the contributing factors for diseases coming from raccoons?

#1 RACCOON FECES

One of the most concerning and serious facts about raccoons are the dangers of their droppings. Typically raccoons will select a particular area and designate it as a “latrine.” So many animals will be using the same area for this purpose. If they settle inside your home and have a latrine there… the droppings should be handled with severe caution. The waste could possibly have diseases being carried in them such as raccoon roundworm. When a raccoon has any roundworms, what happens is that the eggs are in the feces of the raccoon. They could be ingested or possibly they could be transmitted by air if they are inhaled. If at any point you should encounter raccoon droppings, you want to wear gloves as well as a face mask. It is unlikely that you will catch anything, however
remember if your pets encounter their waste, they could contract roundworms.

If your pet should become infected, your pet’s droppings will become dangerous as well exposing your family to the same health risks.

#2 RACCOON URINE

Another problem with raccoons is their urine. A bacteria that can be found there is called Leptospirosis. If the raccoon urine should come into contact with any open wound or is accidentally ingested, the disease may be caught. If it is treated, Leptospirosis can be cured. However if not, it can cause kidney failure, or even meningitis. This will deliver devastating consequences to the human body and could even be fatal.

#3 RABIES

In the United States the wild animals that carry rabies are bats, foxes, skunks and our animal of topic raccoons. Although an attack on humans from rabid raccoons is rare, you would certainly not want to risk this happening.

Preventative measures: Always bring your pet’s food in at night. If not, you may be inviting racoons to your property.
