Reproduction

Opossums can have up to 8 babies in a litter!

Did you know that an opossom is the only marsupial (pouched mammal) that is found in the United States and Canada? When the babies are born they are helpless and tiny as honey bees. They immediately crawl into the mother’s pouch where they continue to develop.

Defense

When threatened, an opossum typically hisses and shows its teeth to look scary to a predator. If that doesn’t work, then it will pretend to be dead and fall over on its side– this will often result in a predator walking away.

Skills

They are excellent at climbing, because they have opposable rear thumbs and long tails that can wrap around tree limbs. Surprisingly, they are also great swimmers, but do not like the water and prefer to be on land.

Benefits of Opossums

While many wild creatures harbor ticks and spread Lyme disease, opossums kill 96.5% of ticks that land on them. A single opossum may be hoovering up and killing 4,000 ticks every week and thereby protecting us from Lyme disease.
