VENICE, FLORIDA -Technicians were called to a house in Venice to investigate odd noises coming from the home’s attic area.
Nuisance Wildlife Removal was called to a house in Venice because the owner had heard noises in their attic, and then spotted an adult raccoon on their roof. Knowing they were in over their heads at this point, they called 866-263-WILD, and we sent out a technician right away.
The NWR technician stuck his head up into the attic of the house and spotted the problem right away. Five baby raccoons were nesting with their mother in the attic space. Although cute beyond description, these raccoon babies and their mother pose a health risk to the residents of the house below.
Raccoons not only bring in fleas and lice to the attic, but are known to carry the Baylisascaris procyonis or “raccoon roundworm” in their bloodstreams. These roundworms lay eggs that do not necessarily effect the host raccoon, but are released through the raccoon feces (poop) and can stay viable or able to hatch for years, waiting for another warm blooded host.
If a human were to come in contact with these eggs through eyes, mouth or nose, even years later, the results could be deadly. The eggs would hatch and then the larvae would migrate to the organs, usually the brain, and grow and feed, causing severe symptoms in it’s human host before causing death.
Fortunately, these babies will be treated for disease and raised in a rehab facility until they can fend for themselves in the wild. The parent will either be trapped or will flee once the babies are gone, and the homeowner will have his attic restored to its original state, minus disease and raccoon damage.
