Elvin Rodriguez’s 9- and 10-year-old sons were playing basketball at dusk on the driveway at their Tavares home when a nocturnal creature slipped through the fence.

After the raccoon started chasing the boys, the family’s dog, a 6-year-old boxer named Macho, came to their defense.

“I think he [Macho] knew, I think he heard the kids yelling and carrying on and he just jumped right in,” Rodriguez, 34, a Lake County Jail correctional officer, said Wednesday. Macho fought with the raccoon before Rodriguez, who grabbed his personal handgun, was “able to call him off” from the battle that left the dog with scratches around his eyes and ears. “Then it stopped for a minute, and hissed, and I was able to shoot it.”

The raccoon tested positive for rabies after the March 13 encounter, marking the fourth time in seven months a rabid animal has threatened Lake County residents.

“It didn’t sink in until afterwards; I was just trying to make sure the kids were OK,” Rodriguez said. “It [rabies] can be very serious.”

In January, a 6-year-old boy died after exposure to a rabid bat south of Umatilla. Two weeks after he reported the “scratch” to his parents, he told them he couldn’t feel his fingers. Then his arms began to twitch and flail wildly before a severe headache set in that sent Ryker Roque, a rambunctious boy, into a coma. He died Jan. 14 at the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children.

In September, a 74-year-old Clermont man was wearing flip-flops and shorts, picking up fallen branches outside his home near Lake Minneola, when a rabid fox lunged at him. He beat it off with his iPhone, dazing it, before fatally shooting it with a .22-caliber pellet rifle. And last month, another rabid raccoon was reported to be in Fruitland Park, according to the Florida Department of Health in Lake County.

“Rabies is a potentially fatal disease. It is important not to handle wild animals, to be aware of unusual acting animals and to keep pets vaccinated against rabies,” department administrator Aaron Kissler said.

Macho is now quarantined in the kennel on Rodriguez’s property until April 27. Read more Dog Stops Rabid Raccoon from Chasing Kids [News blog]

Raccoon

A raccoon on the prowl for his next meal. (Cori Brown photo)

It’s 13 and counting. That’s the number of cute and furry black masked burglars raiding bird feeders (and anything else they can get) over the last six months in our neighborhood. Yes, the annual raccoon invasion is in full swing, as in bird feeders swinging right off of our trees and decks.

How do I know we’ve had 13 visitors? Our neighbor already caught 12 of them with wonderfully smelly cat food and a humane trap.

No. 13, however, is giving him a run for his money.

He’s eluded him for several weeks now and managed to snatch the cat food out of the trap multiple times to boot! Even worse, he’s learned to escape the trap by rolling it over to open the door. What a clever little devil he is!

As a result, those of us subjected to these nightly escapades must now remove our feeders and bring them inside. When you have a lot of feeders like I do, this can be quite a nuisance.

Unfortunately, if I don’t do it, there are consequences to be had. One too many times I’ve found feeders on the ground, some broken beyond repair and others completely gone, as in dragged away to who knows where. Maybe the raccoons have a secret cache of bird feeder parts that they’re selling on the black market.

What I do know is that their raids are costing me money and time. Good squirrel proof feeders can be expensive. So far, they’ve broken three of them but I refuse to get new ones.

Though none of the three now function as designed (the weight mechanisms that keep bigger birds and squirrels out no longer work) they still work well enough to keep the nemesis squirrels away. I plan to keep them as long as I can.

Most of the feeders are in the side yard where I can see them best. This is also where Navi, ever a dog on patrol, dreams of catching up with them and chasing them off. I naively thought that just her presence would scare them away but this obviously hasn’t happened. These guys are fearless!

What is it about raccoons that makes them so clever? The first thing I think of is their paws. They may not have thumbs, but highly sensitive touch receptors on their dexterous fingers are right up there with our own hands.

Partner these sensitive paws with a quick-thinking brain and you have master manipulators at opening cans and doors, emptying containers and climbing up and down and all around to get whatever they want.

This brings me to another envious trait they have: adaptability. Life in the city is great, but suburban yards and country meadows will do just fine, too. From the poshest addresses to back street alleys to campgrounds, they roam with impunity and swagger.

Add to this their varied diet as omnivores and you have a one-two slam dunk. Being omnivores means they eat their veggies as well as meat (they are great role models for fussy eating kids). This is why they probably think they’ve died and gone to heaven when your garbage becomes their dining room table. Throw in the half eaten Tasty cake, leftover chips, hot dogs and French fries and you have the all-American junk food diet!

Now this makes me wonder, do they have a weight problem when these dream foods are so frequently at their disposal? I couldn’t find much information on this other than a story of sixteen fat and happy raccoons in Louisiana that were trapped and relocated away from people who were feeding them all kinds of sugary food. Some weighed between 30-40 pounds when a normal weight in the wild is 10-30 pounds.

In this way they are a lot like humans — too much of a good thing can be bad for you. Hopefully they returned to their normal diet of creatures like frogs, fish, birds, bird eggs and a variety of fruits, nuts and seeds.

Not realizing that aquatic animals make up such a large part of their diet, I can see another challenge in the offing. My new pond came through the winter quite well. I diligently kept the water flowing for the frogs, fish and snails that now inhabit it. All have grown and thrived in their new home.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the raccoons will avail themselves of the creek across the road rather than my pond for their freshwater cravings. I think I will put up a sign that says, “This way to the creek” to help them along.

In the meantime, I need to build a secure bird feeder storage box outside to stash away my feeders at night. My plan is to build a sturdy plywood box with a lock on it. Painting a nice family portrait of some raccoons on it would add ambiance, not to mention something for the real raccoons to talk about!

There are health risks that you should be aware of

after any wild animal has been taken from your home.

What Are the Health Risks of Raccoons in Lakewood Ranch FL?

The health risks of raccoons should never be underestimated. Raccoons create enormous damage and transmit infectious diseases to Parrish adults, children and pets. Contact a licensed and insured nuisance wildlife management company for expert raccoon removal, raccoon trapping and raccoon exclusion services.

The Health Risks of Raccoons

It’s important that you have that Parrish raccoon removed from your attic, crawl space, basement or other building location before things get out of hand. Raccoons contaminate building surfaces with urine and feces and chew up everything from electrical wires to support beams. If you hear noises in your attic, call a wildlife removal professional before a raccoon or some other wild animal causes significant damage or even a catastrophic fire.Wild animal droppings harbor dangerous parasites and foster the growth of mold and microbes. Raccoons are known carriers of infectious diseases that can be contracted by humans and pets.

• Raccoon Roundworm, or Baylisascaris, is a dangerous species of roundworm carried by raccoons. Millions of roundworm eggs are deposited into the environment through raccoon feces. Children and pets can easily ingest fertile eggs by coming into contact with infected soil, tree stumps and other seemingly safe locations. Once inside the body of an animal or human, the larvae migrate throughout the body and infect the brain, eyes, spinal cord and other organs.

• Rabies is a health risk commonly associated with wild animals. Rabies, which attacks the central nervous system, can be fatal if left untreated.

• Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection spread to humans through raccoon feces and urine. Common symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, severe headaches, high fever, anemia, meningitis and organ failure.

• Salmonella is also spread through raccoon feces. Humans and pets can ingest the bacteria through incidental contact with infected areas. The symptoms of Salmonella poisoning include high fever, severe diarrhea and abdominal pain.

Raccoon Trapping and Exclusion

A wildlife management expert can humanely remove and relocate raccoons and other nuisance wild animals. Professionally trained wildlife removal specialists can also decontaminate building materials, repair all damage and permanently seal your home or business to ensure that the problem doesn’t reoccur. Abandoned Townhome Becomes Nightmare [News Blog]

Written by Jalyn Souchek, Reporter

CORALVILLE (KWWL) –

Raccoons falling from their roof is how one homeowner described the nightmare of living next door to an abandoned property.

Phil Ganoe and his wife had just had their first child when they bought their first home over 15 years ago. The next year, their neighbor up and left the connecting townhome, leaving it abandoned.

“It was our first home and we were excited and things started out real well. We didn’t ever think we would end up where we are now,” Ganoe said.

The situation turned into a nightmare when a few years later a storm severely damaged the roof on the abandoned side, leaving a large hole in the ceiling.

It only got worse.

Raccoon Removal River Wilderness Parrish FL

“Every time it rained or snowed, God, we worried,” Ganoe said.

The open hole meant the home was filling up with mold. He worried about the health effects it could be having for his family but, again, it only got worse.

“Then the raccoons came. So, the raccoons got in through the hole in the ceiling and then, before you know, we have raccoons in our ceiling,” he said. “There were dead baby raccoons on our first steps. They had nested in the roof and the weight of them had busted through and fallen out onto our front steps.”

Over the years, Ganoe had tried to get in contact with the old neighbor, but without much luck.

He said they tried to sell their home, but the eyesore that was next door didn’t bring in a single interested buyer. It took several calls to the city.  Eventually, the city of Coralville took possession of the property, he said.

That’s when Habitat for Humanity was able to step in and help.

After 15 years, Ganoe said he was in disbelief something was going to be done. He also feared the damage would be so bad that their home wouldn’t be able to be saved, but that wasn’t the case. The first order of business was to replace the entire roof.

“After hearing Phil’s story and his families’ issues that they had due to this property, we kind of thought it made sense to help out as much as we could,” Heath Brewer, Habitat Executive Director, said. He said, when Habitat took on the property, they had no idea how much the neighbors had been impacted by it.

With a new roof over their head and a raccoon-free home, Ganoe spends extra time helping Habitat with the renovation of the home. After 15 years, he will soon have neighbors again.

“They were nice enough to put a roof on our house. They didn’t have to do that and we’re very grateful for that and, being a neighbor, I kind of feel like that’s the neighborly thing to do,” he said.

To show his gratitude, Ganoe is raising money for Habitat to cover the costs of repairing his side of the home. More about that fundraiser can be found here.

Brewer said the renovations should be completed in April and it will be available for affordable housing. He said the renovations not only help the Ganoe family with their headaches, but it will add value to the neighborhood.

Raccoon Cafes Are a Thing [News Blog]

Facebook/Gus Kentworthy

You’ve heard of cat cafes, but this is something completely new—and a bit bizarre.

When they weren’t winning medals and rescuing dogs from dog meat farms, a few U.S. Olympic athletes spent their time in South Korea doing something a little different. The city of Seoul is a cultural experience with a lot to offer, but the local raccoon cafe called Blind Alley is a particular oddity.

The fact that it’s unexpected is what attracts Korean locals and tourists alike.

Gus Kentworthy at raccoon cafe

Dog and cat cafes and coffee shops are a common sight in the U.S., but South Korea has taken this concept to another level. The raccoon cafe is a place in the city where people go to hang out with these adorably masked creatures. The animals–including a few dogs and a capybara–are kept in a closed-off room complete with tables, chairs, and an indoor jungle gym. Visitors to the cafe can purchase food and drinks and then take off their shoes and venture into the raccoon room. The owner, Han Song Hee, rescued the raccoons from a fur importer.

Olympic skier Gus Kenworthy called his unique experience to the cafe the highlight of his trip to PyeongChang, South Korea. That’s right, the raccoons even beat out competing in the Winter Olympics. Kenworthy shared pictures of him and his boyfriend Matthew Wilkas on social media getting cuddly with the seemingly friendly forest animals.

While pictures are cute and the idea of spending time with cute raccoons sounds appealing, not everyone is on board with the concept of a raccoon cafe. Unlike cats and dogs, raccoons aren’t domesticated animals. They live in the wild and aren’t native to Asia. While some people see happy raccoons enjoying life and meeting new friends, others see a form of cruelty keeping the poor raccoons in an environment that doesn’t match their specific needs.

There are signs posted around the cafe with basic rules and warning visitors that raccoons can bite so they shouldn’t be fed outside food. They’re also encouraged to respect the animals’ personal space, but regulating that rule when people visit for the sole purpose of getting a selfie with a wild animal isn’t always possible.

There are health risks that you should be aware of after any wild animal has been taken from your home.

Raccoons are Omnivores

Raccoons are omnivores, which means that they eat a wide variety of foods including both plants and animals. Their diet is mainly fruits, nuts, worms, insects, amphibians, fish, birds eggs and even an occasional small mammal or bird. If raccoons find that there is an abundant source of food on your property,  they will probably take it rather than make the effort to hunt. This also includes your vegetable gardens– they look at it as a food buffet or in that case a salad bar!  The biggest mistake people make is leaving pet food outdoors. Trash is another lure for the furry fellows. It is widely recommended that you get secured trash can lids and keep it secured in the garage if at all possible. Bird feeders are also no-nos for anyone who does not want to attract the “wrong” type of wildlife to their area. How do you keep raccoons out of your yard? #1 Remove any possible food source.

Raccoons are Nocturnal

Nocturnal creatures prefer to hunt when it is dark outside so that they are camouflaged and it makes them feel safer. If a raccoon should meander into your area, you could dissuade them from advancing by utilizing motion lights and or loud sounds. A simple light by the door may not be enough for a stubborn raccoon though. Auto lights activated by motion in several areas are more likely to startle them and keep them away. Since they don’t like human interaction, the Humane Society even recommends putting an am radio near your trash can with a talk station on. How do you keep raccoons out of your yard? #2 Remove their nocturnal and quiet habitat.

Fences

The everyday normal fence does not help in keeping raccoons out because they are such good climbers as well as diggers. If you are having an ongoing problem with raccoons in various areas such as gardens, yards, homes etc., either chicken wiring or an electrified fence is a good choice. How do you keep raccoons out of your yard? #3 Install chicken wire or electric fencing to prevent them getting into places where they are not wanted!

Are Raccoons Dangerous During the Day? [Fishhawk, FL]

Two raccoons interacting.

What Does it Mean When You See a Raccoon During the Day?

  • Is there a food source available?

  • Was the raccoon frightened?

  • Is there high competition in the area at night from other nocturnal animals?

It is a fairly well known myth that if you see a raccoon walking around during the day, that it is sick or that it has rabies. Even though raccoons normally are most active at night (nocturnal) they can take up activity during the day for a variety of different reasons.

What is considered normal activity?

If you see a raccoon that is behaving responsively during the day it is probably fine. They might come out during the day if there is some food available, or if they have been scared from their daytime sleeping spot, or if there is a high competition in the area from other nocturnal animals. It is very common to see baby raccoons during the day, while the mother raccoons might be out looking for food.

What is not normal?

It is never normal for an adult raccoon to show symptoms like loss of balance, difficulty walking or lethargy. If you see a raccoon acting this way, or if one is bleeding or injured contact a professional wildlife trapper.

How Do You Get Rid of a Raccoon? [Longboat Key]

How to get rid of a raccoon. Longboat Key FL
Pic of a raccoon with wildflowers.

Best Methods for Raccoon Control

  • Protect your trash

  • Make them feel unwelcome

  • Employ scare tactics

  • Keep yard clean and free of attractants

First of all and probably the most important thing to do to get rid of a raccoon on Longboat Key is to protect your trash! There’s no reason for the raccoon to leave if you keep a food source available for them. To get started,  pick up some metal garbage cans, bungee strap cords, and a cement block. Once you have the garbage can strapped down with the cord, place your cement block on top. Next, be sure to keep your yard cleaned up from stuff that a raccoon would want. For example, try not to leave any pet food out overnight.. also not any fruit from fruit trees. Bird feeders will also have to be brought in for several weeks. Once they notice that the food source is no longer there, they will stop coming around. Make them feel unwelcome. Actually the only way to probably do that is to put up a barbed wire or electric fence around any vegetable garden areas. Almost any fence can become electric by adding one strand of wire about 8 inches back from the fence. Employ some scare tactics.. There are devices designed to scare off unwelcomed invaders that work well. The problem comes in because raccoons are so smart and they realize that most of what you put out there can’t really do them any harm. An example would be a motion detector device such as floodlights or  radios (set to talk radio) as raccoons would avoid human voices and even sprinklers.
